I’m honestly surprised that I hadn’t posted this one yet. Enjoy.

This is the first Whodini track so far on the blog. Don’t judge!

I had always heard much but never really took the time to listen. It’s almost as though I was keeping their music as a treat to start listening to “one day”. I knew it would be good, and that it wasn’t going anywhere. I guess that’s why they call it the golden age.

And the musicality of this one is really off the hook imo. There were so many (pop-influenced) tropes from the hip-hop production styles of the 80s. In some ways I feel that Hip-hop had to navigate its way around these for a while before getting back to its roots. The new beat boxes, the synthesizers, the spot-on drum programming. But this is really something different. There’s a lot of soul here. This, is something special. Do enjoy.

A brief, open letter to John Robinson:

Dear J.R.,

On the real of reals, The Leak Edition Vol. 2 is 100% classic. It’s on a different level than a lot of the “classic” albums that have come out since the golden era. It is fulfilling to see that you have received a good amount of shine for your artistry, even if it’s only a fraction of what it would be if the scene was were it’s supposed to be. Know that heads are still listening to this in 2018. One day when everything flips back around, music like this, and the Emcees who wrote it, will be remembered fondly.

Looking forward to what’s in store, Brother. Peace.
